    DOL Wage and Hour Division Investigations and 2018 Updates

    Key Objectives:

    1.  Provide information about recently proposed regulations and final regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Labor/Wage and Hour Division

    2.  Provide information about recently issued guidances, opinion letters, and initiatives of the U.S. Department of Labor/Wage and Hour Division.

    3.  Workshop regarding what to expect from DOL/WHD Investigations and how to handle them, which is also a guide for how to conduct your own internal wage and hour audit.

    4.  Workshop regarding classification of sample jobs as Exempt or Non-Exempt under the FLSA and how to evaluate and/or write job descriptions

    Per the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge, HR professionals attending this workshop will develop Technical Competencies in HR Expertise under the Workplace knowledge domain, functional area #15, “U.S. Employment Law & Regulations,” in the Key Concept of Compensation.    

    HR professionals attending this workshop will be able to assess whether job classifications and pay practices at their organizations comply with the FLSA and the latest positions of the DOL/Wage and Hour Division.  In addition, they will be ready to respond properly if confronted with a WHD investigation of their organization’s pay practices.

    Speaker Bios:

    Jill R. Jensen-Welch is a shareholder-attorney at Dickinson Mackaman Tyler & Hagen, P.C., in Des Moines, Iowa.  She specializes in Employment Law and Civil Litigation.  Jill has B.A., M.S., and J.D. degrees from Drake.  She is licensed to practice law in Iowa and Minnesota.  Jill is a regular speaker and author on employment law topics for human resources and business groups and she has taught Employment Law at Drake University’s Law School as an adjunct professor.

    Before becoming an attorney, Jill was a human resources professional for over fifteen years at various employers in Des Moines, including the State of Iowa, FDIC, Meredith Corporation, Norwest Mortgage (n/k/a Wells Fargo Mortgage) and Principal Financial Group.  She is both HRCI-SPHR and SHRM-SCP certified. 

    Jill has been recognized every year since 2008 as a Leading Lawyer for Business in Iowa in the Labor & Employment Law category which is a client-driven honor awarded by USA Chambers and Partners.  Jill’s peers in the legal profession have also recognized her by selecting her for inclusion in editions of the Best Lawyers in America for her work in Employment Law for Management since 2013.   

    Mike Staebell joined the Dickinson Law Firm in April 2016 after retiring from the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division (WHD), where he spent 33 years enforcing federal employment laws. In his final six years with the agency, he served as WHD District Director for the states of Iowa and Nebraska.  

    Mike has given hundreds of presentations to the public on statutes enforced by WHD and is a popular presenter to professional and industry associations throughout the Midwest.  He has presented to associations of human resources professionals, payroll administrators, bankers, CPAs, municipalities, counties, cooperatives, attorneys, grocers, and construction companies.

    As a Compliance Specialist, Mike works under the supervision of Dickinson’s attorneys to assist clients in understanding and complying with federal labor laws.
