    Presenting: Marijuana and CBD in the Iowa Workplace

    One of the more complex and confusing areas of employment law is that of Marijuana and CBD in the Workplace. States are legalizing medical and recreational use of CBD and marijuana despite the fact that it remains largely illegal under federal law. Iowa’s Medical Cannabidiol  law is relatively new and still evolving. This presentation will sort out this mess, to the extent possible. It will focus on how Iowa’s law impacts workplace issues such as drug testing, impaired workers, and reasonable accommodations for disabled workers.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Learn proper terminology, and understand workplace concerns, regarding marijuana and CBD
    • Learn a framework for analyzing marijuana issues in the employment law context
    • Learn about Federal law governing marijuana and hemp
    • Learn an overview of state laws regarding marijuana in the workplace (esp. states contiguous to Iowa)
    • Learn Iowa laws governing medical marijuana and three key workplace concerns
      • Drug Testing
      • Impairment at work
      • Disabilities and reasonable accommodations

    Jill R. Jensen-Welch is an attorney at Dickinson Mackaman Tyler & Hagen, P.C., in Des Moines, Iowa. She specializes in Employment Law and Chairs the firm’s Labor and Employment Law Practice Group.

    Jill has B.A., M.S., and J.D. degrees from Drake University. She is licensed to practice law in Iowa and Minnesota.

    Jill is a regular speaker and author on employment law topics for human resources and business groups and she taught two semesters of Employment Law at Drake University’s Law School as an adjunct professor.

    Before becoming an attorney, Jill was a human resources professional for over fifteen years at various employers in Des Moines, including the State of Iowa, FDIC, Meredith Corporation, Norwest Mortgage (n/k/a Wells Fargo Mortgage) and Principal Financial Group. She is both HRCI-SPHR and SHRM-SCP certified.

    Jill has been recognized every year since 2008 as a Leading Lawyer for Business in Iowa in the Labor & Employment Law category, as awarded by USA Chambers and Partners. Jill has also been selecting for inclusion in editions of the Best Lawyers in America for her work in Employment Law for Management, every year since 2013.
